FXUS65 KBOI 232040 AFDBOI Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boise ID 240 PM MDT Wed Oct 23 2024 .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday night...A shortwave is moving across central OR and strengthening as it moves across the state. This shortwave will bring a potent cold front through the area late this afternoon in eastern OR and this evening in southwest ID with rapidly falling snow levels. Snow already falling at 6500ft at Wagontire, west of Burns OR. Expect moderate precipitation along the cold front with wind gusts up to 40 mph across extreme SE Oregon this afternoon. Slightly higher wind gusts expected in the Treasure and Magic Valleys this evening with gusts up to 50 mph possible along the cold front. The strongest winds are forecast to be near Mountain Home. A wind advisory remains in effect for the southwest Idaho highlands and the Magic and Treasure Valley this evening for the wind gusts associated with the cold front. Precipitation will quickly taper off behind the front after midnight. Snow levels range from 6500-7500 ft ahead of the cold front to around 4500-5500 ft behind the cold front, but snow accumulations remain limited to the highest peaks as the precipitation tapers off quickly when the cooler air arrives. Generally 0.10 to 0.25 inch of precipitation expected for the area with this system. Thursday and Friday will be dry with light winds and a warming trend. Temperatures on Thursday will be around 10 degrees cooler than today, before rebounding to near normal by Friday. Friday morning will be the coldest morning of the period with temperatures in the 10-20s in the mountains and upper 20s to low 30s in the lowest valleys. .LONG TERM...Saturday through Wednesday...Dry southwest flow will bring mild temperatures on Saturday and Sunday ahead of a trough in the Gulf of Alaska. By Monday this trough will move into the region, bringing a cold front with cooler and unsettled conditions through Wednesday. Snow levels fall to 3500-4500 feet with this system. Temperatures will be around 10 degrees above normal on Saturday before lowering to 10 degrees below normal after cold front moves through. && .AVIATION...Cloudy, lowering ceilings.
